ABOUT US
In early 2010 business on the Burnet Historic Square was ok but not great. A few of the merchants got together and discussed ideas for increasing traffic to the square. While Burnet has a beautiful art deco courthouse, the only one in Texas, it does not reach high in the sky for passing travelers to observe the usual spires or clock
It was determined that signs placed along Hwy 281 and Hwy 29 would help to guide travelers to the square. Some monies were collected and a sign was designed, built and placed about 2 miles north of Burnet on Hwy 281 north. Traffic seemed to improve and plans were made to place more signs. Since this initial activity, the Economic Development Committee has worked with us and a new larger sign was placed on Hwy 281 north and a similar sign has been approved for placement on Hwy 29 east. The original sign was updated and is being used on Hwy 29 east until the new sign is finished.
This initial activity led to regular meetings at the old Tea-licious restaurant to see what else could be done to improve business on the square. A ladies night outĀ was planned to see if they could also improve local participation on the square. Other businesses heard about the event and asked to be included. A total of 24 businesses took part in this event.
Today, the Burnet Association of Merchants is a non profit organization that is made of businesses that are open to serve the citizens of historic Burnet and the thousands of visitors to the lakes and hills that surround this hill country community.
It is our goal to attract more people to go shopping and do business in Burnet through promotional events, advertising and keeping the merchants working together in a informed and friendly but competitive environment.
Our monthly meetings provide an opportunity to share concerns and suggestions about improving business.
We are guided by by-laws that promote an ethical and professional atmosphere and their mission statement to serve the business community.
In addition to working with the City of Burnet, we also work with the Chamber of Commerce in co-sponsoring the City wide Garage Sales and with the Austin Steam Train Assoc. to ensure that their train riders have a pleasant shopping and dining experience here in Burnet. Presently we conduct 5 events yearly to draw visitors to our community. We have also been approved to operate as a nonprofit 501c3 association. Our association has placed collection canisters around town to collect monies for the local food bank, LaCare, and plan to expand our charitable work as we grow.
We presently meet monthly at the City Council chambers on the 4th Thursday of the month. Come and join us as we grow and improve the business community of Burnet.
